 ONE OF OUR
favorite aspects of researching the Civil War is
passing on what we learn to the next generation. We
accomplish this through our program of school
presentations. We have done school programs for
Jefferson, Knox, Sevier, Blount, Hamblen, and Greene
County Schools. A school presentation is like a field trip
that comes to the kids. Dressed as Civil War soldiers, we
invade and occupy the playground or a classroom. We may
set up a small army camp on the playground or fill a
classroom with battle flags and military equipment. The
classes rotate in and out and we perform our presentation
four to six times so everyone gets to learn.
We start
by giving a background of the Civil War: how it started,
what the strategies were, when and where it happened.
Then we go over the soldier's equipment piece by piece,
what it was for and how it worked. We tell the kids what
battles and skirmishes took place in the neighborhoods
they live in. Then we finish up by answering questions
from the kids.
