guideline will help the Civil War reenactor outfit
himself to accurately portray a soldier of the 79th New
York. NOTE:
Always talk to an official 79th N.Y. Quartermaster before
purchasing equipment. For
simplicity's sake, I have included only two of the many
variations in wartime uniforms: an early war uniform and
a late war uniform. The early war uniform, used from 1st
Manassas until about the middle of 1862, stood out from
other units with its dark blue pants and red trimmed
jackets. Later in the war the highlander's uniforms could
scarcely be distinguished from those of any other Federal
unit. Here are the two most common uniforms worn by the
79th NY. New York Militia Uniform
1861-1862
Kepi -dark blue French pattern, rolled top and
square brim. New York State buttons. Small brass company
letter and "79" centered on the front.
New York State Jacket trimmed with red
or sky blue piping.
M.1842 .69 musket with matching bayonet
and scabbard. (Company E had Enfields)
.69 caliber cartridge box with US box
plate.
Large or small US belt plate and
matching belt.
Shield pattern cap box.
Black tarred haversack with roller
buckle.
1858 smooth side canteen with wool
cover.
Dark blue infantry trousers.
Smooth side out Jefferson brogans.
Dark blue great coat.

Federal Campaign Uniform
1863-1865
In the Spring of 1862 supply
responsibility was shifted from the State of New York to
the Federal Government, resulting in a marked difference
in the uniforms and equipment issued.
Federal kepi or
